# Fashion Portfolio Layout: Pacing, Typography and Sequence The layout of a fashion portfolio is part of the design statement. It should be confident, consistent and quiet enough that the clothes stay the subject. ## Lead with the image Fashion is visual. Each project should open with its strongest single image — a garment, a look, a full-bleed photograph. The image sets the tone before a word is read. ## Then show the thinking After the opening image, show process: - mood board and research - sketches and development - fabric and colour exploration - toiles and construction Process pages slow the reader down and prove the work is designed, not just styled. ## Keep the grid consistent - one column grid with consistent margins - one typeface pairing - consistent caption style The layout is scaffolding. If it draws attention to itself, it is too loud. ## Pacing the whole book Alternate image-heavy spreads with quieter text/process pages. A portfolio where every spread is a full-bleed photo becomes monotonous; a rhythm of "wow, understand, wow" keeps the reader engaged. ## Sequencing projects - **Lead with your strongest, most complete project.** - **Vary the work** — don't put two similar collections back to back. - **End deliberately** — the last project is the closing impression. ## Typography rules - One or two typefaces maximum - A clear hierarchy: project title, intro, captions - Legible sizes for print and screen ## Fashion-specific details - **Flats and technical drawings** belong in a consistent spot per project - **Credits matter** — if a photograph is not yours, credit it - **Consistency across projects** — same label style, same image treatment For the content each project should carry, start with the [fashion design portfolio guide](/fashion-design/fashion-design-portfolio/).
